Jhalokati Sadar and Barisal Sadar upazilas on the north, Bakerganj upazila on the south, Barisal Sadar upazila on the east, Rajapur and Jhalokati Sadar upazilas on the west.

Nalchity thana was established in 1924 and was turned into an upazila in 1983. It consists of one municipality, 9 wards, 10 union parishads, 149 mouzas and 150 villages.
